Update from Val Thorens

Submitted by Jakob on 17 April, 2006 - 18:55.My Blog | Travel
I've been in France since the past four days, enjoying awesome skiing in Val Thorens in the French Alps near the border of Italy. I'm currently in an Internet cafe that is overpriced just like everything in this village, a tribute to tourism and commercial exploitation. The worst thing with Val Thorens is doubtlessly its lack of atmosphere, genuinity and soul. Imagine three dozen sport hotels built out of concrete on some distant mountain top surrounded by 30 lifts and you get the idea. Basically everything here is expensive, and quite boring, it's all about the money! You're here to do one thing: ski! So about the skiing.

Val Thorens is one of three mountain valleys in the French Alps, these three valleys are known to offer the best skiing in France and based on what I've seen so far, it appears to be true. The landscape is nothing short of breathtaking, the scenery is mindblowing. I've only been over to the other two valleys today and the skiing was extraordinary! This is the my first time in the Alps and unlike Sweden where there are roughly four pistes per lift, it's more like two here. The slopes are long and offer beautiful views of the landscape. The difficulty is easy to medium, some pistes offer parts that could be consider "black" (difficult) but it's mostly blue and red all through.

Overall, despite its prices, boring characteristics and total lack soul and charisma, I'd recommend this place. It offers great skiing that's both accessible and varied, an awe-inspiring landscape of peaks at 3,000+ meters (9,000+ ft) and glaciers. Luckily ski passes aren't expensive and much less than I'm used to considered what's offered so if you can live cheap and love skiing, GO!

I'll post more of my impressions and experiences later this week, I just regret the lifts close at 17.00, because I want to ski more! Every other skier knows what I mean, it's an addiction!

I pay 0.15 a minute here to access the Internet so I have to be brief. I'll post pictures once I get home. See you soon!
