Like I wrote in the post, the two ways are NOT mutually exclusive. The themes will be released under certain terms but I also offer people the chance to raise money to have me do the work to ensure the new themes aren't just ports of the old ones but standards based CSS layouts, entirely semantic XHTML and outstanding looking designs. Perhaps there's even someone who wants to sponsor the work as a favor to the community. I am open to ideas.
I estimate the required amount is around 1,750 USD (or 1,200 EUROs) per theme. Every contributor will need to contribute a certain minimum amount ... once I know there's enough people being interested, I'll know how much that will be.
