Problems are good for one thing: fixing

Submitted by Jakob on 9 May, 2006 - 20:11.My Blog | Drupal

When I added the Dreamfall review yesterday I realized certain things did not work as they should, and after investigating the problem further it turned out that there was a problem with blog type nodes. After receiving good advice in the #drupal at I began to troubleshoot, and in the process found a great way to set up a staging version of my site for testing new code and modules.

Dreamfall - beautiful and bittersweet but a journey that ends too soon

Submitted by Jakob on 8 May, 2006 - 15:09.My Blog | Computer & Video Games | Reviews

I just finished Dreamfall, the sequel to the highly acclaimed game The Longest Journey. I have some mixed views and feelings regarding the game, but in summary I'd say it is beautiful, mesmerizing but also utterly confusing. It is a game that pushes the limits in many ways, visually and mostly when it comes to its narrative form. This game is more like a journey, an interactive movie that pulls you in and gets into your heart, which is why the separation in the end is so painful.

The quest for the usable wiki

Submitted by Jakob on 6 May, 2006 - 15:28.My Blog | Human-Computer Interaction | Usability

A wiki is a wonderful idea, in essence it's a website that anyone can edit and view. I've used wikis in several projects related to my studies in order to have a common site for storing documents and notes related to our work, and that has worked well and our teachers have appreciated it. So far I've used, tried and looked at four or five wikis, and despite the simple idea behind the wiki, none of them is easy to install, use or customize. Why does it have to be so complicated? I don't know, but I have some ideas on how to make a more usable wiki.

Related Nodes - my first Drupal module

Submitted by Jakob on 6 May, 2006 - 12:52.My Blog | Drupal

Many blogs list related blog entries as "Related Articles", however currently this isn't something that Drupal supports, nor could I find a module that does. It seemed I would have to write my own module, so yesterday I started working on what was to become my first Drupal module. It's called 'Related Nodes'.

When is "humor" actually humor and when is it racist?

Submitted by Jakob on 5 May, 2006 - 00:06.My Blog | Politics & Society

Talking to my friend Bexx who lives in this US, and can be seen posting here at my site now and then, she showed a picture of tshirt she perceived as being racist, perpetuating stereotypes about native Americans. This made me recall the recent and similar political debate and media storm regarding the caricatures posted in the press containing a derogatory depiction of the prophet Mohammad. What should be considered racist and what should not?

Can web designers truly make a difference?

Submitted by Jakob on 4 May, 2006 - 19:47.My Blog | Politics & Society | Web Design

As living beings, we are born, we grow up, live and die. During that period of time many of us would like to produce something that outlives us, and almost everyone wants to impact others such as family, friends and lovers. Some of us think the world is unfair and wish to do something about it, but can you do that, regardless of your profession? I believe you can and I'll tell you why, from my point of view as a web designer.

I'm co-founder and consultant at NodeOne, a Drupal consulting firm. My background is in cognitive science and computer science and I've worked as a web developer for over ten years. During that time I've done web design and development based on usability and web standards. I've also worked with phpBB, offering customization, theming and development phpBB sites and themes. I'm currently working as project lead and systems architect, building first class web sites, intranets and web applications on Drupal.

This is my personal website, home of my blog and my portfolio. The website also features articles and tutorials on web design, usability and other cognitive scientific musings as well as reflections on politics and society. You'll also find my free phpBB templates here.

Enjoy your stay and come back soon! Should you have any questions or comments do not hesitate to contact me.
